America Faces a Shortage of 7.2 Million Affordable Rental Units

A new report from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition reveals a significant shortage of affordable housing, with approximately 7.2 million fewer rental units available than needed. This equates to only 35 homes for every 100 people who require them. The report notes that this shortage places financial burdens on tenants, preventing them from saving and negatively affecting the overall housing market.

Dan Emmanuel from the National Housing Center emphasized that the market alone cannot provide affordable housing for low-income individuals without support.

This comes amid a broader crisis marked by a general shortage of housing across all income levels. Data from Realtor.com shows that the housing gap reached 4.03 million units due to a slowdown in construction.

The lowest-income group, earning less than 30% of the median income, includes low-wage workers, seniors, people with disabilities, and students. The report also points out that solutions increasing the housing supply could give low-income families better options and help curb price inflation, although the data is limited, as it does not account for homeless or transient households.
